Kenyan long-distance runner Abraham Kiptum tragically passed away in a car accident in Kaptagatu, western Kenya, according to the AP agency. Kiptum lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and collided with a tree. He was accompanied by his coach, Gervais Hakizimana from Rwanda, who also died in the accident. Another passenger sustained serious injuries.
Kiptum made headlines last year when he set a new world record in the Chicago Marathon, completing the race in 2 hours, 35 minutes, and 35 seconds. This time surpassed the previous record held by double Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge by 34 seconds.
Due to his impressive achievements, Kiptum was considered one of the top contenders for a medal at the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
