Petra Kvitová’s match against Olympic champion Belinda Bencic did not happen. Muchová lost to Świątek 1:6, 6:4, and 4:6 in a match that lasted nine hours due to the rainy weather. The Polish favorite, after a successful reprisal of this year’s Roland Garros final, is guaranteed to remain at the top of the rankings after the tournament.
After a 1-1 tie in sets, the players had to go to the locker room, and upon their return, Świątek managed to break Muchová’s serve. They didn’t finish the second game either, as rain forced them off the court again. Muchová was unable to recover from the service loss.
„It was an exceptional day; I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a situation like this. You have to find energy, even though we’ve been here since nine in the morning,“ said twenty-two-year-old Świątek.
Ninth-seeded Vondroušová lost to sixth-seeded Gauff 3:6, 0:6, ending her streak of nine consecutive victories. On the other hand, Gauff confirmed her excellent form as she won the trophy in Washington on Sunday. Bouzková was unable to match Kasatkina, with the Russian player winning 6:3, 6:4.
